Arctic Combat, also known as Battery Online, is an upcoming F2P MMOFPS from Webzen, the global portal also providing new titles such as C9 and Archlord X, etc.. Arctic Combat started commercial services in Korea and some Asian countries at the end of yester-year. But the global version is still in development, with beta and launch unreleased yet (a possible launch in 3Q, 2012 is mentioned in one interview with AC’s two producers). The first official trailer showcasing the fast-paced strategic gameplay has just publicized.

Arctic Combat Preview:

Arctic Combat is set in a near future when the natural resource found in Arctic Ocean triggers the WWIII. Against such a setting, flame of war has blazed almost everywhere on the earth from the US to the Middle East.

To create a character, the initial choice of customization is limited, offering not much variation in looks and outfits. Since it’s a FPS online game, role-playing plays lesser role in it. Yet as players progress, there can be more items gained and equipped to further define characters. And players have to choose side, US-led Allied Force or Russia-headed Red Star Alliance.

As in most games at this genre, weapons are important in a battle. In it, weapons rather than classes are tagged with a type, which means players can not choose to play as a sniper or an assault but can pick up weapons in such categories. Weapons can be gained from battles, bought in cash shop, or traded through Auction House. At the end of each game, players can be rewarded with a chance to roll for items from common to unique in the Trophy system: it’s totally about luck and performance on battles is irrelevant to the draw.

Combat is fought like many shooting games. Arms in hand and march forward in search of opponents to fire down. Allies set off together, but can be pushed scattered by fire. Battles are fierce requiring constant lifting up guns, and battles are heated demanding cool head: a gun lay in ground can be a ready bite; before you pick it up, you are ambushed. Moreover, to make the battle more realistic, it implements a Gore system, which renders splattering blood and flying limbs based on actual shoot. At launch, six game modes will be available, listed as Team Death Match, Free for all, Demolition, Conquest, Search and Destroy and PvE missions.

It’s run on Unreal Engine 2.5 instead of 3 with a purpose of accommodating more potential players with relatively low spec PC systems. For sure, visual effects will sacrifice a little, but remain satisfactory. So far, so much. Stay tuned for more info.
