Immerse yourself in a fantastic island, raise a rich collection of dragons and engage in combat with pet dragons against other players’. Welcome to Dragon City, a new pet breeding simulation game in Facebook.

Dragon City

Dragon City is generic in gameplay inside the social genre. Build different habitats appropriate to the nine different types of dragon, have dragon eggs hatched, grow food to keep the dragons well-fed and breed different types of dragon together to generate new offspring. These are the basic and major activities to conduct in tutorial and in the following quest line. Quests are never in short; what’s in need here is an intriguing story to thread all separated quests. Hardly story-driven, quests soon fall flat, degraded to grinding with the sheer goal of progression being level-up and collection of further more dragons.

There are currently up to 159 dragons that fall into nine categories including Fire, Water, Plant and so on. To fill up the Dragon Book, players can get dragons through different ways, by hatching new eggs, breeding two different types of dragon together, feeding an acquired dragon well to evolve it or using Recruitment Tavern to get with friends’ help, etc..

Housing and petting constitute the bulk of gameplay in the beginning. As players reach Lv. 10, Dragon League, a new playable element of PvP, is unlocked to allow players to challenge other players for XP and money. Combat between dragons is supposed to be exciting and intriguing, but turns out to be just another form of grinding. Not only is the battle constrained to limited matches, 12 times per day, but the combat itself is designed in a “careless” manner – defeat or victory, no dragon gets hurt.

It’s good news that there is not the usual Energy Bar; badly, though, there is still the constraint in playing time at one sit and general gameplay pace by means of currency system. Gold can be gained through questing, collected from habitats or won in combat. Players sail through the first levels smoothly without being baffled by the lack of money until arriving at Lv. 7 when an egg of plant dragon priced 15, 000 gold starts to force the gameplay to a halt. To move on, players need to grind to accumulate gold, which can be avoided only if they would like to directly purchase the gold.

Dragon City has great graphics with vivid animation, quite typical in Facebook titles. Similarly, the entire gameplay is also Facebookish, making a generic impression if put in a critical way. The game boasts as many as 650,000 monthly active users now, but it certainly needs improvement to sustain the momentum.
