Farmerama is browser-based wacky online farming game, which is sort-of console variation of the original Farmville on Facebook. In it, players will take up the role of professional farmers and have a good time in the old-styled farm life. Grow plants, raise animals, build cottages, harvest to sell or make products out of raw materials. At the cockcrow, another busy day starts. Are you in?

Famerama is a game that is most enjoyable for short bursts of gameplay. It doesn’t require your continuous attention or presence; instead, you can just sow or plant or feed by a few clicks, leave to take care of other business, and then return to harvest and refill the empty land again when you have minutes to idle away. It’s a game mainly for single players, although it also adds the social feature such as friends list, neighbor visits and letters send out in post office, etc..

Gameplay is simple and straightforward. After a short tutorial led by an owl (you can have owls after reaching certain levels), you are on your own. At start, you don’t have better things to do other than plowing more land on which to plant crops, plant apple trees and buy (not build) animal houses so as to raise them and harvest the offspring. There are a large collection of crops, fruit trees, animals and decorations. But they are all level-locked and early access can only be gained with Barnyard Bill (BB), the in-game premium currency. Practically, you can just develop the farm by playing and you will gradually have them all in your farm.

As the farm expands, you will have more tasks to do every time you visit it. Reap the sowed in the land and sow again for next harvest; tend to the animals – pick up eggs, shear the sheep, clean the mess, feed and water the offspring; and get the rest done whether it’s to mill animal feed or refill the tank or trade to get some country coins. If you have more time to stay, you can beautify the farm to give it a layer of your personality. You can certainly add pieces of decoration with coins, but more interestingly (in personal opinion) you can play with the differently sized plots like jigsaw to make some special layout of your field by using the multitool (move, rotate or demolish) for free.

If you want to rapidly develop the farm, BB is needed and helpful. Besides the early access to higher-level seeds or animals or regions like green meadow and park, it is used to hire town criers to get more orders from villagers, hire watchman to help in the farm, or activate the seeder, harvester or farm droid in a limited period to automatically take care of corresponding farming tasks. Yet these are more like tuck-on features and can be missed out without much regret.

Farmerama is passable. Its graphics is colorful, 2D without much animation. It provides the staples of farming simulators in a standard fashion. There is nothing particular striking about it. But if you love the farming genre and solo play, it’s nice daily retreat.
