Highly Anticipated New MMORPG Games for 2013

Nov 13,2012 by Eleanor

Year 2012 saw the release of many wonderful games and it also heard the announcement of some others that are stored for the next year. For MMORPG fans, it is another happy, entertaining year with games. Well, there is over a month and a half to go, so it’s still early to make the summary of this year. But to count what we can have in 2013? It can never be too early. And it is surprising to find that you’ve already had many choices promising a new year of fun.

1. ArcheAge

ArcheAge 2013

ArcheAge is an exciting sandbox MMORPG with open-ended gameplay. It cuts off the restrictions of tradition and allows players to explore the world with great degree of free will. Players can choose 3 of 10 abilities to make their own classes and decide what kind of people they want to be in the game. Players can explore around, venture into dungeons, PK other players (who can become Pirates if marked red by certain killing), claim a piece of land where they can build houses, boats and castles, tame and raise battle pets, join guild and participate in massive siege war, etc..  They can even hunt underwater treasures using a ship, scuba gear and air bags. ArcheAge is slated to enter open beta in December this year in Korea, and to launch in North America towards the end of 2013, or the beginning of 2014.

2. Black Desert

Black Desert 2013

Black Desert is a highly-anticipated fantasy MMORPG with a series of exciting features. It has a seamless open world the same size of Vanilla WoW, in which players can explore around for adventure, fight scaled battles full of action against monsters and real-players, and purchase houses in the towns to serve specific purposes. It is being developed by Pearl Abyss, the C9 creator, and slated to come out in South Korea for the public in August or September of 2013.

3. Blade & Soul

Blade & Soul 2013

Blade & Soul is a fantasy MMORPG with a backdrop of Asian lore and legend. It features four distinct races and 6 unique classes (8 planned) players can choose from to create and customize their own characters. It starts with the PvE gameplay and ushers in PvP combat when players join a faction. Quite traditional in structure, the game provides martial arts-inspired combat system and Qi Gong-based actions. High jump, flee state, combo attacks and full-contact strike make the combat intense and exciting. And it uses Unreal 3 Engine to bring an oriental fantasy world back to life with impressive graphics and visual effects.

4. BLESS

BLESS 2013

BLESS is a story-driven fantasy MMORPG set in the backdrop of Medieval Age. It revolves around the conflicts of two rival nations, monarchial Hieron and individualistic Union, and thusly leads players into the expansive warfare in the seamless, vast land. There are ten races (each with its own story) for either faction, and fierce battles that will be fought on land, sea and sky. PvP, epic raids, massive castle siege, Realm vs. Realm and missions, etc. are prepared for combatants to strengthen their power and access to new resources and quest lines if they triumph. And a special End-game content will make sure players have something new to pursue even when they reach max level. Built on Unreal 3, the game will present gorgeous graphics with details. BLESS is said to have the first CBT in early 2013 in Korea only. And no word is revealed about the localization in western land yet.

5. EverQuest Next

EverQuest Next 2013

EverQuest Next is the working title of a new MMO in the popular franchise of EverQust, which was described as “the largest sandbox MMO ever designed”. The game will reimage Norrath as a parallel world to those in the original titles of the franchise with a brand new storyline of its own. Currently, it is still short in details about in-game systems and features. Generally, it will be a game with a style similar to the original EverQuest. And it utilizes a new game engine called Forge Light.

6. Lineage Eternal

Lineage Eternal 2013

Lineage Eternal is an epic free-to-play MMORPG developed by NCsoft Korea. It shares the same backdrop universe with its predecessors, presents the classic isometric view and offers epic battles with hundreds of enemies. It builds on the traditional patterns of an MMO, but differentiates itself with the innovative combat system, due to the mouse-based skills. Instead of pressing buttons to use skills, players can do more with their mouse controlling the character in battles and better immerse in the battle with more initiative. Draw a circle to unleash area-of-effect damage to enemies within reach, or draw lines to give the arrows of the ranger charged shots – players can expect more. The game is planned to come out in 2013 with a beta test occurring in late 2012.

7. Pathfinder Online

Pathfinder Online 2013

Pathfinder Online is a fantasy MMORPG that is mixed with sandbox elements. Based on the namesake tabletop game, Pathfinder Online will bring the classic title back to life in PC and offer a unique experience with many of its special features. It provides the standard archetypes and classes, but also allows those who want to design their own characters to do that using the free-form mode. It offers the usual adventure, but implements the dynamic trading and crafting system players can use to build up homes, settlements and even kingdoms. And the player-controlled kingdoms can grow and go to wars.

8. Red Stone 2: Adventure of Prominence

Red Stone 2: Adventure of Prominence 2013

Red Stone 2: Adventures of Prominence, the sequel to the original Red Stone, made debut in the G-Star 2012 and caught much attention with its rich and interesting features. The game will have different character classes, dual-class-based transformation system, engaging party play and combinations, survival dungeons on the open world and basic concepts of PvE, PvP and RvR. All of these are rendered in a 3D world with awesome graphics in an anime art concept. Red Stone 2 is slated to have an alpha test in March 2013.

9. Survarium

Survarium 2013

Survarium is a special free-to-play MMO that combines shooting experience with role-playing. It is set in a post-apocalyptic universe where players need to take up arms to survive. Players can join one of 9 Factions (some are free), collect and purchase weapons, customize characters, win reputation and ranks, level up and learn more skills to become stronger. Both competitive PvP battles (with a team) and story-driven co-op missions of PvE are available in the game. Survrium has a scheduled launch at the end of 2013.

10. The Elder Scrolls Online

Elder Scrolls Online 2013

The Elder Scrolls Online is the first MMORPG built on the popular Elder Scrolls franchise. It is set in the continent of Tamriel a thousand years before The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, and features a storyline of its own. Three warring factions are against each other over the throne of the empire. An intriguing world, unique quest line, exciting combat and politics in the faction will all be there. The game was announced in May of this year after 5 years’ secret development, and it is scheduled to be released in 2013.

11. The Repopulation

The Repopulation 2013

The Repopulation is a sci-fi sandbox MMO that cast players into the role of clone colonists in the planet of Rhyldam. There is no usual leveling system, leaving the in-game progression solely dependent on the 75 different skills. Players can join three-faction wars among FPR (Free People’s Republic), OWON (One World, One Nation) and player-built faction, and fight in scaled battles under two different modes, Action (FPS) or Role-playing. Players will be able to build their own cities with all forms of structures, which can be besieged and defended. Besides battle, players can also explore around, craft items, develop techs and even design creatures.

12. Wildstar

Wildstar 2013

Wildstar is an upcoming action MMORPG that presents hardcore gameplay under the wrap of cartoony artworks. Different from any other MMO games, Wildstar offers a special Path System on the top of races and classes, which allows players to pursue a distinct play style as Explorer, Scientist, Soldier and Settler in the planet of Nexus. And the mysterious planet will open to players differently based on their choice of path.

Nice reviews on the highly anticipated game of 2013. Something about Lineage Eternal make me want to say that it's going to be the next big thing, mixing action-styled RPG with the MMORPG genre. I can't wait for these games to be out. We'll see how they develop!
