MechWarrior Tactics is an upcoming browser-based turn-based strategy game set in the BattleTech universe, which is being developed by Tarnie Williams and Chris Cleroux. It’s rooted on the original board game and incorporated with online features to present the asynchronous combat rich in tactical planning, high customization and deep collectability.

MechWarrior Tactics is set in the year 3025 when players as commander of an elite mercenary company lead their mech-warriors to defeat the closing in enemies. Pick up one mech, customize it with loadouts, square off in the battlefield, and win to get rewards and level up.

As in most strategy games, players’ participation in the battle lies in the preparation of a match, selecting the fighting mech and armed it the best possible way. Free configuration is not allowed, for different equipment types must go with the specific slots, except special variants. Moreover, the game adopts randomized booster packs instead of predictable, direct purchase of certain gear. On one hand, such model glazes every pack with hope and surprise; on the other, it results in frustration out of disappointment and necessitates extra expenditure sometimes. And as developers promise, the game will provide “seamless store integration” so that players don’t need to “leave the game to purchase and equip new resources for next missions”.

Players can customize their mechs with real cash or money earned in the game. Besides gears from bought packs, players will also collect a large number of components, which can be sent to particular manufacturers to create weapons with bonuses.

The game is basically about 1vs.1 competition that pits two players against each other. But it usually falls flat quickly due to the lack of variety and depth if a game is all about one blowing up the other. Apart from the deathmatch, players can expect to engage in missions and matches which involve players making choices and decisions. Run on Unity engine, it will be different from the flash-based titles, though being browser-based. And graphics will be in quality.

One good thing about online games is that the game release is not an end but a beginning. It’s true to MechWarrior Tactics. Even though it’s not launched now, developers have promised to brigh about regular contents expansion with new available mechs and equipment. Release date is to confirm yet, but it’s scheduled to come in 2012.
