Retro World sounds nostalgic. Now in beta, this new Facebook title is to take you back to then popular shows and min-games from 1980s to 1950s. Gameplay is casual and hybrid with bits of role-playing in TV shows, past popular mini-games and hidden object games.

Retro World

After simply picking up an avatar, you are in. Host Dick Clark greets you with his exaggerated gestures (at least depicted in the game). Nothing complicated about the game. The starting screen is shaped a plane radio, which goes well with the theme and also clearly presents the three major in-game sections, Shows, Arcade and Hide&Hunt.

To start from the shows, you can choose to familiarize yourself in the Audition or directly jump into one TV series. With the simple click operation, big arrow indirection and Hint button ready to help, you can just head off to one show, say, the 1952’s I Love Lucy episode Job Switching, in which you follow the storyline that Fred and Ricky switch to be the housemakers while Lucy and Ethel try to be breadwinners, and become part of it via interactive mini-games such as helping Fred find materials for breakfast and so on.

Besides, you can also try Kat the Bart helping the mischievous grounded Kat do some tricks, or join the space race in OWL Files. To awake memories is for those who lived those ages; and for younger gamers who perhaps know them for the first time, these shows hardly stir up sentiments but invariably offer lighthearted fun in leisure. Shows are mainly based on episode lines, images and cutscenes; you mainly click to drive the story forward and regularly become part of it; and it can keep you staying for a while and enjoy, which I think is credited to the interesting plots that survive time.

When you have enough about the show, you can turn to Arcade, where you can find four options, each of which belongs to a specific decade. Mahjong of two types, Space Ape Race or the Big Fish-off – all solo and simple. The hidden object game in Hide&Hunt can only be played with friends. It offers three different game modes but is just a social tuck-on. In fact, these two sections leave much to be desired. To argue nothing about the classical-or-not, I believe there are more and more interesting games in each decade can enlist as potential candidates.

Retro World is meant to offer something old and shiny. The television show is a nice touch. Yet on the whole, it lacks of rich contents and soon makes gamers feel maxed-out. Still in beta, it really needs further polishing and enriching.
