WoW is a giant that leaves the enormous following MMO titles struggle but fail to step out of the giant shadow it casts. And DotA seems as much influential in the MOBA genre, so as to be the one late-comers endeavor to excel or rival or differ from at least. Rise of Immortals, another core MOBA that makes efforts to be different.

For those strange to multiplayer online battle arena, it’s also a genre described as action real-time strategy. The basic gameplay is that a player act as a hero and team up with others to battle players and AI-controlled monsters/minions from the opposing team, destroy a series of guarding turrets along the way, and try to destroy rival team’s base to win. Balanced characters, teamwork and strategic control are what it takes to make an immersive game.

Rise of Immortals offers the classic and basic gameplay that is expected from an MOBA. But it also provides social and role-playing elements to bring a hybrid experience. To be specific, it features a persistent leveling system for characters and a central social hub rather than the usual chatroom for interaction.

Selection of an immortal/hero is prior to access to the lobby. There were initially 12 heroes in the list, which expanded to 21 as of now with more promised to come still. Read the character skills, role in group, damage types and stats, and pick up the one suited to your play style. Strangely, though, all these immortals are like siblings from a big family with partial parents in favor of some kids while negligent of others. Not only the artwork of characters in terms of looks and texture is not of the similar performance, so is to the more important balance of skills and abilities. It’s free for players to try and learn new heroes and develop each alongside skill trees separately from scratch, only that re-choosing heroes is not allowed in the queue and must be logged in of the account once again.

While some heroes are free for limited use, others require to be purchased with game coins or Prestige Points. Also the purchasable also include skins and items used to customize characters, though the skins need more inspiration to really make a difference rather than changing color or texture. Also, there is also co-op PvE content friendly to rookies or casual players to familiarize with the game and earn special achievements and XP.

Rise of Immortals has what it takes, but needs further tweaks in balance and creativity to let the potential shine.
