Timeless Gems is a new match-three and board game hybrid that combines the elements of dice and play table into the match-3 genre. Inspired by popular children’s books, the game takes you into the journey in companion of Alice in the Wonderland and Dorothy in the Yellow Brick Road.

Timeless Gems features the traditional match-3 mechanics that involves swapping and matching gems of the same color you’ve been very familiar with. It differs from most in its combination with board game represented by the special gem table design, or specifically, the outer layer of the table. While you still have the play field square for matching fun, you get an extra ring outside where the heroines like Alice and a variety of garden items such as flowers and mushrooms are placed.

Of all tile types, you get the dices characteristic in a board game and can match them to move your heroine on the outside ring. The sum of the dices in a match decides how many steps she takes collecting coins and other event items like acorns, hookah signs and musical notes along. To speak of events, you have special tile types other than gems on the board at some stages and can match those tiles to fill the bonus meter and trigger story-related events such as helping the white rabbit fix its watch or lighting the hookah for the caterpillar lying on a mushroom. These events usually run within 20s or 20 moves. Once you complete them you will be switched back to the standard game again to resume the unfinished missions.

Every puzzle in Timeless Gems is either move or time based and every puzzle has one main objective you complete to pass the game and two bonus missions that give you a boost on the star meter via completion. The objectives can be different from level to level but generally categorized in several types – make Alice to do 2 laps around the board, charge up the bonus meter within x moves/seconds, make one hyperstar, row crasher, fire cross and the alike, clear garden items around the board, match a certain amount of a specific gem, score x points within the timer or given moves and so on.

As you play towards the level objective, you can generate powerful gems by skillful matches as usual. A T-shape match creates a cross fire that burns one column and a row of gems away; and a match of five gems in a row generates a hyperstar that can be matched to any adjacent gem to eliminate all of its color, for instance. And these powerful gems can be purchased directly before playing a level as power-up items, too. Boosters are one way the game monetizes plus the optional purchase of lives and access to new chapters.

Every tale in the game contains couples of chapters each with five or so nodes. You need to complete the previous one to unlock the next and usually get a bonus play in the last node of a chapter. While the first three chapters in Alice’s journey in wonderland can be unlocked freely as long as you complete the previous ones, you will need friends’ help or spend money to unlock the rest. Invite 3 friends or pay $0.99 to continue your journey.

Timeless Gems is on the whole a fun match-3 game, beautiful and addictive. Its integration of board game elements and with tales turns out to be great offering a fresh experience. But you need in-game friends to support each other’s journey; otherwise, you have to cough up some cash very soon.
