World of Western is a new social strategy game available on Facebook. The game is set in a tough Wild West ravaged by outlaws and leading players into a casual, fun gaming experience by a motley of town-building simulator and turn-based shooting battles following an adventure story.

In World of Western, you enter the role of a Sheriff who newly takes office in a town of the West. And you are intent on leading the town into prosperity and peace by building and expanding the area while recruiting and training soldiers to take on the merciless bandits out there. Town-building simulation and turn-based gunfire are the pillars of the core gameplay. Following the quest chain, you will shift between missions of the two types to make progress.

World of Western

When you first arrive at the town, there is already a rudimentary layout of it on the small patch of land surrounding by unclaimed desert. You will clear the scattered cactuses, withered trees, stones and bushes to make room for construction of buildings. Housing, Infrastructure, Industry and Military are the four major categories. By construction, you will increases the population, improve the townscape, produce materials from crops to wood to gold, and train soldiers of different types to fight off outlaws. And the project from building to training usually takes time and energy to complete.

You also need to defend your residents and town. So, fight. You can purchase different soldiers in the Sheriff House when you meet the requirement in levels and resources, and position them around the town or take them into turn-based battles. To fight a battle, you select the appropriate soldiers in response to the enemy types tactically to fill the several fighter slots, then choose the target every time in your turn to shoot, and at last receive rewards at the end of a battle. The in-game battle is presented in a third-person shooter style, but in a casual way with the lack and loss of quick pace and demand in skills. You can pursue the story-driven campaign against NPC criminals, or invade friends’ territories to flex your muscle. Prepare for revenge invasion, though. You surely see that comes.

It’s a strategy game with strong features of social interaction. You need friends for long-term play. Friends can fill the staff slots in Infrastructure-style facilities that can but be filled by spending Diamonds (the hard currency) otherwise; they can help as ally forces in tough battles more frequently than the every-18-hour assistance from an NPC; and they can help you accelerate the development of your Town by offering resources, collecting ready materials and simply becoming your temporary foes when you need an invading target.

The Energy system is the general pace-setter in the game. Energies are needed not only in the construction of Town but also in battles – every shoot takes one point of Energy to perform. It is never enough to support a continuous gameplay at one sitting as it is drained quickly by building, harvesting and shooting. When you run out of Energy in the midst of a battle, you can always pause it and resume it when the energy refills over time if you don’t want to throw down some real cash, but that really makes the non-exciting battle even worse. Moreover, the battle scene doesn’t support full-screen function and requires loading every time.

World of Western is passable on the whole with its solid simulation and strategy core as well as good graphics and animation. But as many of its mediocre contenders, it is doomed by its unoriginality.
